History

AITIA/HUMANITIES MAGAZINE was founded in 1972 in the apartment of Dr. Louise Horowitz,  Brooklyn College when a small group of educators met to start a magazine to meet the needs of teaching philosophy and the humanities. The other founding members were  Professor James P. Friel, State University of New York at Farmingdale, who continues as  editor today, Dr. Angelo Juffras, William Patterson College, and Professor Oscar Mohl, City University of New York. One of our advisors was Dr. Gerry Meyers, Graduate Center,  City University of New York.

The founding of AITIA/HUMANITIES paralleled several revolutionary activities    in the `70's, in the education field. AITIA/HUMANITIES was the first publication  focusing on teaching philosophy and the other humanities. A grant of $15,000 was  given to Farmingdale State by the Matchette Foundation to run a series of teaching humanities conferences and to support the new magazine. A number of papers from the conferences were published in A/H. Also, out of the conference, a new magazine was born, TEACHING PHILOSOPHY. The founders of AITIA/HUMANITIESand TEACHING PHILOSOPHY went on to fund national conference groups, such as The American Association of  Philosophy Teachers, which meets every two years. Also, Professor James P. Friel was chosen to Chair the American Philosophy Association's new Committee on Teaching Philosophy in the two-year colleges, which is responsible for running three national conferences a year on teaching philosophy, and he also served on the new Committee on Teaching Philosophy. All back issues are available for $1.50.
